Outstanding Achievement
On the afternoon of 15 February in Timor Leste at Dili F/S Kathleen Nikau, one of two RNZAF Aviation Refuellers assigned to the Australian Defence Force’s Timor Leste Aviation Group, was presented with a ‘JTF 631 Commendation for Outstanding Achievement’ by the Commander ISF, BRIG W.T.B. ‘Bill’ Sowry.
This was a significant event because such awards are not made lightly, and it is the second to be awarded to a member of TG GYRO 6 (the first being to GNR William Johnson, RNZA). The presentation was made as part of a TLAG end of rotation medal parade, conducted at Timor Lodge.
For Kathy, the occasion was made even more special by the unexpected appearance of a number of fellow Kiwis, including the all-volunteer GYRO 6 Multi Cultural Group (formed under the mentorship of SGT Pererika Makiha), who honoured her with the company haka.
The essence of F/S Nikau’s achievement was her professionalism and enthusiasm in constantly striving to ‘improve the safety and management of the Timor Leste Aviation Group’s aircraft support capability’ and assuring the ‘safety of [her] comrades and the continued delivery of this capability’ to the ISF. Her ‘unique contribution’ to welfare and morale was also recognized. I believe this was in part, a reflection of the ‘Kiwi way’ embedded in an ‘Aussie’ team.
