// NZ Troops return from tour in Timor-Leste

A tour of duty in Timor-Leste which saw the attempted assassination of Timor-Leste’s Prime Minister and the death of rebel leader Alfredo Reinado will end for 142 New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) personnel when they return home on Monday.
Army Company Commander Major Chad Preece said the Kiwi contingent have worked really hard and are looking forward to returning to their loved ones, especially after missing special family occasions like Christmas.
“It’s been a busy six months in a constantly changing situation, and I’m proud to have been part of a team that has stepped up to challenges presented by developments in the security and political climate in Timor-Leste during that time. Everyone is looking forward to getting home."
The company drawn mainly from 2/1 RNZIR based in Burnham are the fourth rotation to serve in Timor-Leste since troops were again committed in May 2006, and they will be welcomed by Commander Joint Forces New Zealand Major General Rhys Jones, family and friends.
The contingent will arrive at Christchurch International Airport on Monday 19 May. Media are invited to attend.

New Zealand Defence Force’s commitment to Timor-Leste at present also includes two helicopters and 31 personnel serving with the Combined Joint Task Force, as well as two Military Liaison Officers serving with the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT) and two advisors to the Timor-Leste Defence Force (F-FDTL).
New Zealand has contributed to various United Nations and peacekeeping efforts in Timor-Leste since 1999.
